iPOD – MP3 Player Charger by MC34063

iPOD - MP3 Player Charger by MC34063

Portable iPod charger that you can use while away from your computer. The circuit is based around an MC34063 switchmode regulator. This has high efficiency so that there is very little heat produced inside the box, even when delivering its maximum output current. The circuit is more complicated than if we used a 7805 3-terminal regulator but since the input voltage could be 15V DC or more, the voltage dissipation in such a regulator could be 5W or more at 500mA. and 5W is far too much for a 7805, even with quite a large heatsink.

Motorola’s S9 Headphones for iPod/Phones

Bluetooth headphones are such a great idea, but I haven’t seen any that are light enough to take to the gym until now. I came across Motorola’s S9 Bluetooth headphones at CES, and was surprised by how good they sound. These behind-the-ear active headphones are water-resistant and include integrated touch controls that allow you to navigate through your music, as well as answer calls wirelessly.

And they also work with your iPod if you purchase a Bluetooth adapter that attaches to the bottom of your player, much like the one used for the Nike Plus Sports kit. You won’t like these headphones if you don’t like earbuds, and I can see how they can be irritating to wear while running. The black or red rubberized headphones are very sleek, though, and probably the lightest Bluetooth headphones I’ve seen. The S9 Motorola Bluetooth Active Headphones will be available in the first half of 2007.

iPods Implicated in Pacemaker Malfunctions

A study by an Okemos High School student in conjunction with several doctors has concluded that iPods can interfere with the functioning of pacemakers. Holding the iPod in proximity to the pacemaker caused malfunctions in 50% of patients tested.

The iPods caused the pacemakers to record incorrect telemetry and in one case caused one to stop working. The researchers are concerned that this interference could lead doctors to misdiagnose heart conditions based on the pacemaker’s telemetry.

“It’s clear that iPods can affect pacing function. There is a possibility for a severe reaction, such as loss of consciousness,” said Dr. Edwin Kevin Heist, a cardiac electrophysiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
